M.Arch Architects, we partnered with national food distributors to design food distribution facilities that could be deployed to communities throughout the United States. Eden Food Centers were designed in response to the growing issue of Food Deserts&nbsp; in cities due to inefficient systems of food production and distribution. M.Arch Architects and their partners worked on developing the design and manufacturing of distribution spaces adaptively re-used into food distribution centers. The adaptive reuse of shipping containers became the main means of construction for the centers. M.Arch Architects proposal included consulting with museum board of directors, city planners, developers, and potential investors in the development of this design. The design focuses on architecture as playing a significant role to address the need for stronger support for local economies and inefficient food production and distribution. We worked closely with vertical farming companies and tech consultants in planning small and large scale farms within commercial buildings. These indoor famrs required the development of complex partnerships to find the right tenant-factory ratio. Schools, elderly care, existing retail uses, or in this proposal a museum that will help educate public to healthier diets and more sustainable communities were some of the mixed use possibilities considered.&nbsp; Visibility, Transparency, and Accessibility are key themes in this design with a larger goal of reducing consumption and encouraging engagement, sharing, trading, and transactional interactions between the users.&nbsp; The design is easily deployable and scalable making it suitable for dense urban areas, and can be executed as a simple infill, rooftop addition, or ADU.&nbsp; The structure is a steel frame and glazing facade system wrapped in a perforated metal cladding. The steel frame structure gains additional shear support by connecting to a neighboring building. &nbsp; &nbsp; The facade uses Low-E solar control glazing that reduces heat penetration with UV rejection window film.&nbsp; The perforated cladding adds additional privacy while maintaining a certain level of transparency and visibility. The storage walls are prefabricated modules that can be combined in many ways making the system highly adaptable to the space. The prefabricated walls also function as the interior structural system. Made from reinforced concrete, the walls support the load of the floor plates above. People’s belongings are then secured in transparent lightweight Teflon-based polymer called ethylene tetrafluoroethylene or ETFE. The ETFE bubble is then inserted into the prefabricated wall. With people’s belongings being stored in this manner we hope to encourage more conscientious keeping.
